Leicester trio MOUTH CULTURE are set to embark on their UK headline tour, kicking off this February with thirteen shows in total running into March. Coming off the back of their recent show opening for While She Sleeps and with their EP ‘Mishaps of My Mid Twenties’ under their belt, the band have been gaining lots of attention recently, and rightly so. We sat down with the lads to chat about the tour, how the EP has been received, and what is still to come.
—
How did Mouth Culture form?
Mason: Myself and Jack have been playing in different bands in the Leicester scene for the last 10 years. We knew each other through the scene and wanted to start something new. We then met Todd around two years later.
Todd: I was living with Jack when he started the band, helping him write songs here and there. Their original bass player left, and because I was involved anyway, they asked me to join.
—
What is the Leicester scene like currently?
Jack: Growing up, the scene was amazing. We were all fans of indie music when we were younger, and then the heavier scene started popping off. It then took a nosedive pretty drastically. Shamefully, we don’t really have a grasp on our local scene currently. We try to play it once a year to make it special by making the show bigger and better each time.

You recently toured with Teenage Wrist across the UK, playing five shows, with four selling out. How much did you enjoy being on the road and playing shows?
Todd: It was sick.
Mason. It was game-changing. Personally, for me, I discovered one of my favourite bands. They were the nicest guys. Perish from France were really nice too, and the tour had a whole vibe.
Jack: Each band was very different, but it worked out. They were such a nice bunch of people. Teenage Wrist have been touring for years, so they know their shit. It was nice to sit down and chat each night and pick their brains a bit too.

What was the reception like from the crowd each night?
Jack: We made so many new fans, didn’t we?
Todd: It was kind of surreal, really.
Jack: The one thing I have heard almost every night at the merch table is, “I don’t know how I haven’t heard of you before.” It seems since then that it’s kind of snowballing now.
Todd: It does show you the importance of marketing. It was a sick experience overall.

The EP is titled ‘Mishaps of My Mid Twenties‘. What is the message behind choosing this as a title?
Todd: It’s the inevitable thing that happens in your mid-twenties that you can’t avoid. We wrote it in a way that was open to interpretation for everyone else’s situations. People can attach themselves to their own experience rather than what we were going through.
Jack: We wanted to write an honest record.
Todd: The title just came out randomly one day when we were in the garden. It clicked at that point and channelled it through the music.
—
How well has the EP gone down with your fans?
Jack: People who have followed us for a while have seen the progression, and they know how much work we have put into the EP. One of my idols shared it on his Instagram story, which was wild. During our hometown show, we gave out a QR code to those who came down, and they got an early listen to the EP.
Mason: When we signed with InVogue Records, the opportunity came for us to release it on vinyl, which we are doing, but we are just waiting for the copies to arrive, hopefully before we go on tour.

You recently supported While She Sleeps at their hometown show in Sheffield. How did it feel to be playing a show of that size?
Todd: To me, it felt like it lasted three minutes. It went by so quickly.
Mason: We have never played a show of that size before. We had a crew with us that made it super smooth and stress-free.
Jack: I didn’t go out there before we came on. I was saying to the boys before we went on that if it was half full, we had done well. Then to come out, I couldn’t see a single gap. It took my breath away a bit. We were well looked after backstage and got to meet lots of people too. It was a dream come true, if I am being honest.
Mason: We are super excited to be returning to Sheffield on the tour too. It’s become a core place for us now.
—
How excited are you to be heading out on your own headline tour in February/March?
Todd: I am looking forward to going into it with full confidence.
Jack: We have had some great backing too with the likes of Kerrang! and Rocksound is promoting the tour.
Mason: Seeing the likes of Paramore and Queens of the Stone Age advertised on the same website as us is nuts.
Jack: There are people already on the Discord planning routes and going to more than one show.
—
Now that we are in 2024, what else do you have lined up?
Mason: We are having pretty substantial talks about some tours.
Jack: It’s great that people are vouching for us. We have a few festivals already lined up for the summer, too.
Todd: We will be supporting The Blackout in Manchester just before the tour, which again will be one of the biggest shows we have played.
Mason: We ended 2023 on such a high, and that is continuing into 2024, which is super exciting.
—
If you had to pick your perfect rider for your headline tour, what would it include?
Jack: An ounce of weed.
Todd: I’d have a massage chair and some camembert with hot bread.
Mason: I’d have a massive paella. Let’s get Gordon Ramsey to cook it too.
Jack: Dr. Pepper, a bag of fruit gums, and some buds.
—
Do you have any final words?
Jack: ‘Mishaps of My Mid Twenties’ is out now. If you haven’t listened to it yet, listen to it. Go buy your tickets and come watch us live.
