Los Angeles’ THIRTY SECONDS TO MARS returned to the UK as part of their ‘Seasons’ world tour, which saw the band postpone the original dates from April to June. Despite the moving of dates, the first night of tour in Nottingham served as a huge welcome back for Jared and Shannon Leto as they made their mark on UK soil once again.
Cheers erupted around the arena as the timer counted down from 100, and the number thirty began to flash on the screen. The screens then displayed both Shannon and Jared making their way to the stage from their dressing room, delaying their entrance as the noise from the crowd began continue to increase as they approached the side door.
As the duo made their way on to the stage, the arena erupted as ‘Up in the Air’ kicked off the set. The music video served as the back drop, shaped in the triangle symbol that is associated with the band, all whilst Jared made his way down the catwalk to get as close to the audience as he possibly could, for now.
The forceful ‘Kings and Queens’, followed next, with a display of fireworks that was face melting in its brief spurts but yet fit perfectly for one of the band’s greatest hits. Subsequently, Jared invited a select group of fans to join him on stage for ‘Rescue Me’, while the frontman was still manning the stage and Shannon was pounding on the drums next to him, the lucky fans made their way onto the stage and were allowed to move around freely during the song. Soon after came ‘Hurricane’ and ‘This is War’, which predictably sparked a massive sing-along. The latter was uplifted with a skyline filled with confetti as it rained down on the Nottingham crowd which then over lapped into the following song.
An acoustic rendition of ‘From Yesterday’ served a very pleasant and welcomed change in sound, with another throwback of the title track ‘A Beautiful Lie’ being delivered as emphatic as the recorded version, showing the bands live sound still hasn’t aged. The new catchy track ‘Get Up Kid’ got a well earned positive reaction despite it not being a well known hit, but nevertheless it could be a future favourite in the setlist.
As ‘Attack’ rounded off the set, the band returned to the stage for a three track encore. ‘Stuck’ opened the conclusion of the night, whilst their biggest hit ‘The Kill (Bury Me)’ had fans old and new screaming the words at the top of their lungs. Jared then invited a whole bunch of fans on stage to see out the final song of the night ‘Closer to the Edge’. People of all ages made their way on to the stage, with the frontman greeting them one by one as they joined their fellow peers. The folk on stage were jumping around, having the time of their lives, all in the space of a four minute song.
THIRTY SECONDS TO MARS’ return to the UK was nothing short of beautiful, a truly unique band who continue to bring their dedicated fan base together, with people travelling from all corners of the world to join in unity and witness one of the most electrifying acts around.
