Emerging as favourites within the UK alternative scene since the release of ‘Peripheral Vision‘ back in 2015, Virginia based shoegaze outfit TURNOVER made their way across the pond for a run of intimate shows to conclude their album cycle for ‘Myself in the Way‘. Having experimented with each release, the band continue to bring an unpredictable set list that grips their fan base with every performance.
The capacity crowd eagerly awaited the bands return to Leeds, almost five years since their last visit to the Yorkshire city. A set list filled with elegant vocals, dreamy guitars and joyful songs is exactly what TURNOVER bring to every set, and the crowd weren’t disappointed one bit. As they emerged from the back of the stage, the room erupted in cheers. Taking their positions, the band rolled into ‘Tears of Change‘, taken from their latest record. Following up with the title track and ‘Ain’t Love Heavy‘, these were the only tracks to feature on the night from ‘Myself In the Way‘. A different approach to usual set lists when surrounding an album cycle, but it set up the remainder of the set with crowd favourites from then on.
As the first note of ‘Humming‘ was hit, the crowd exploded. Their voices were certainly heard, singing every word like their life depended on it, and this was only track four of the night. The dreamy sentiments from their monumental release continue to please the crowd almost ten years on, with this carried over into ‘Like Slow Disappearing‘ before taking it up a notch with ‘Super Natural‘. The crowd were already pleased with the way the set list was going, but there was still more to come. ‘Humblest Pleasures‘ then set up ‘New Scream‘, both delivered flawlessly as the Leeds punters embraced both tracks with grace.
With only two songs from their fourth record ‘Altogether‘ featuring, both ‘Parties‘ and ‘Much After Feeling‘ came towards the end of the performance. Now with little time left, TURNOVER still made sure they packed in some highlights of theirs into the remaining moments. Capping off their triumphant return with ‘Diazepam‘, followed by fan favourite ‘Dizzy on the Comedown‘ and ‘Take My Head‘, the crowd were still left begging for more. A brief break from the stage saw the Virginia act return to the stage for one last song, that being the opener from their iconic second record. ‘Cutting My Fingers Off‘ picked up the voices of the Leeds mob once again, this time at their absolute peak, to the point the guitars and vocals from Austin Getz were drowned out. Grinning from ear to ear at their more than positive reception, it was a much welcomed return for TURNOVER.
Next year see’s ‘Peripheral Vision’ turn 10. Could we see an anniversary tour? Stay tuned.
