After a two-year break from the live stage, Kilmarnock trio BIFFY CLYRO made a surprise appearance at the charming Halifax venue, The Piece Hall, to perform an evening filled with  hits and surprises, serving as the ideal warm-up for their headline performance at this year’s Victorious Festival.

The entire venue erupted with excitement at the band’s arrival, eager to witness the Scot’s return. The band did not waste any time in diving into their signature style with a banger, which came in the form of ‘The Captain‘. Everyone in the venue enjoyed hearing the enthusiastic “whoas” from the crowd, and as ‘Only Revolutions‘ is approaching its 15th anniversary, ‘That Golden Rule‘ followed shortly thereafter. Moshpits rapidly formed as the anticipation rose before unleashing the breakdown, which is a massive climax that is equally as gut-wrenching live as it is on record.

To keep the years rolling back, ‘Who’s Got a Match?‘ made an early appearance on the set list whilst unexpectedly and for the first time in 5 years, ‘Born on a Horse‘ kept the ‘Only Revolutions’ ball rolling. As much as Simon, Ben and James collectively deliver a thunderous performance, they all play huge parts individually too, from Simon’s screams, to the Johnston brothers beautifully matched vocals adding to the electric atmosphere.

Two emotionally charged pieces ‘Different People‘ and ‘Biblical‘, kept the party going before ‘Black Chandelier‘, served as the final track of the night from ‘Opposite’, with the biggest surprise of the night came in the form of ‘Saturday Superhouse’ being played for the first time as a full band performance in over 10 years. The crowd favourite ‘Mountains‘ was welcomed with an enormous blast from the confetti cannons as the paper filled the sky for the final chorus. BIFFY then exited the stage to heighten the anticipation of an encore.

Returning to the stage, Simon Neil began the four-track conclusion with the moving song ‘Machines‘, and ‘Wolves of Winter‘ followed promptly. The Halifax crowd created a stadium-like atmosphere for this unique but incredible performance by the Scotsmen with ‘Bubbles‘ and of course, ‘Many of Horror‘, which powerfully ended BIFFY CLYRO‘s 22-song set list and a welcomed return to the stage once again.
