As part of their UK headline tour, Australian band Teenage Joans stopped by Sound City to chat about their debut appearance at the festival and much more.

So I’m here with Teenage Jones outside, Arts Club in Liverpool, and you’re about to play your first show of your first UK tour. How excited are you?

TJ: It’s pretty cool. We’re so excited.

Have you got any Liverpool bands you’re loving at the moment?

TJ: Oh, I don’t know if you have recommendations. Let us know. We know that it’s the Beatles’ city. So maybe The Beatles.

You’ve also just finished touring with Biffy Clyro. How was that?

TJ: Oh, my god. It was so fun, amazing, yeah! What an incredible band as well.

Did you spend a lot of time with them or get to learn anything from them?

TJ:We hung out with them a little bit. They were lovely. We actually were just saying before we were talking to them about Dr. Pepper. They really like Dr. Pepper. Because I love Dr. Pepper. It’s like my favorite drink. I was wearing a Dr. Pepper shirt, and they were like, ‘Oh my kindred spirits!’

You also released ‘Bandits’ a couple months ago. What’s the inspiration behind the single?

TJ: To be honest—actually, we’ve been listening to a lot of country music. While we’ve been here, which is really off-brand for the UK. We’ve got our American country playlist, but yeah, we just wanted to write a country song. It’s like country rock. It’s really fun. Something different.

You’re also teasing a new single at the moment as well, do we have a name for this single?

TJ: It’s called ‘Coming Up From Hell.’ and it comes out on May the 8th.

Is this a sign of something bigger, maybe like an EP?

TJ: Yeah, oh, maybe something bigger than that, an album is coming and ‘Coming Up from Hell’ was the first track on the album as well, as in the track listing!

Favourite band or artist?

TJ: Five Seconds of Summer.

Favourite song of yours to play live?

TJ: Probably ‘Five Things I Can Taste’ is one of them, for sure. Bandits! Bandits!

Your dream venue to play?

TJ: The O2 Arena. In London.

One of your favorite albums?

TJ: I think my favourite album is Norman fucking Rockwell by Lana Del Rey, I’m a Lana girlie.

I think mine is ‘Feel Something’ by Movements. I have too many to think about, to be honest.

Finally, what is one of your biggest inspirations when it comes to your music?

TJ: I guess Five Seconds of Summer— just name dropping them again. Yeah, we’re super inspired by them!
