Concluding their tour of Spain and Portugal with a triumphant display in Barcelona, Steel City behemoths Malevolence graced the Catalan city with riffs, breakdowns and ferocious vocals, conquering yet another country as they left their mark in Espana once and for all.
European heavyweights Nasty kicked off the show with sheer force. An already packed Razzmatazz welcomed the band to the stage, with vocalist Matthi Tarnath encouraging crowd movement right from the get go. Pure energy is what Nasty brings, no matter the setting and Barcelona certainly brought theirs too. As the set progressed, more nad more people began to poor into the venue and were immediately involved. Pits quickly formed and gave the Nasty boys a reception they were more than happy with for sure.
Nearly three years on from their last appearance in Barcelona, the long awaited return of Malevolence was set to be a very welcomed one. Charlie, Baines, Kon and Wilkie took up their positions on stage as they opened with ‘Trenches’. Vocalist Alex Taylor finally made his way out and in typical Malevolence fashion, they started off as they mean to go on, pure riffs. The Barcelona crowd quickly formed a mosh pit in the centre of the room, with the entire band watching on to witness the brawls happening below them. Wasting no time in churning out track after track, ‘Life Sentence’ quickly followed from the opener, with the energy in the room quickly picking up.
Continuing the set with the likes of ‘So Help Me God’, ‘Still Waters Run Deep’ and ‘Karma’, it was ‘Self Supremacy’ that got the loudest cheer of them all as of yet. Taylor wanted more though, as he requested those stood at the back of the room to get more involved. He wanted everyone to feel apart of the Malevolence experience. With his wishes granted, service resumed into ‘Higher Place’ and ‘Keep Your Distance’, the latter saw a member from the crowd take over Bryan Garris’ segment as the Knocked Loose frontman was sadly not in Spain to give the track the full experience as he did at Slam Dunk Festival. Nonetheless, a flawless rendition had the Malevolence boys smiling as he leaped back into the crowd.
Fans of Malev’s old material were set to be pleased as throwback heavy hitter ‘Serpent’s Chokehold’ made an appearance towards the latter stages of the set. The chorus that Kon Hall delivers exceptionally every time was drowned out by the Razzmatazz crowd, further proving the track remains a firm favourite not only on home soil for the band. Almost identical to its music video, ‘On Broken Glass’ had the whole room involved. Baines’ guitar solos throughout had everyone amazed, as he would taken centre stage to rip out ungodly riffs before Taylor would return to stare down each audience member.
Alex thanked support act and good friends Nasty for joining them on the tour, a duo that have played countless shows together for over a decade now, which received a huge applause and cheers from the entire room. Malev concluded their Barcelona return with ‘If It’s All the Same To You’ to bow out of their Spain and Portugal tour with the strongest possible ending they could ask for.
