Texas pop-punk comedy icons Bowling for Soup and folk-punk Frank Turner are more than equipped with sets that crowds far and wide make the effort to travel for. Now with both acts coming together for the ‘Bowl My Bones‘ UK headline tour, a rare stop in Yorkshire towns Scarborough and Halifax saw a night filled with fan favourites at both the Open Air Theatre and the legendary Piece Hall.
It has been almost two decades since Frank Turner has landed in Scarborough. Now accompanied by The Sleeping Souls, Turner’s song’s pack more of a punch live than ever before. Having opened with ‘I Still Believe’ across both shows, Frank and the band unleashed 18-songs into Yorkshire, including crowd pleasers ‘Girl from the Record Shop’, ‘Recovery’ and ‘Four Simple Words’, as well as an acoustic rendition of his much adored single ‘The Way I Tend To Be’. The Sleeping Souls has played alongside Frank Turner for almost twenty years, and has collaborated in the studio since 2008, including the chart topping record ‘FTHC’.

It may only be four years since Bowling for Soup last performed in Scarborough, but their debut in Halifax was one that has been long awaited since the band ensure to play towns outside of the main touring circuit. Throwing in pop-punk staples such as ‘High School Never Ends’ and ‘Punk Rock 101’, a surprise cover of ‘Stacy’s Mom’ had both the Scarborough and Halifax crowds singing along as expected.

The comedic punk rockers rounded off with ‘Girl All the Bad Guys Want’ and ‘The Bitch Song’ before returning for an encore that saw their well known cover of SR-71’s ‘1985’ round off the evening.
Bowling for Soup’s love affair with the UK shines through their releases, with four live albums recorded and unleashed to the public. Their most recent being the 20th anniversary celebration of ‘A Hangover You Definitely Deserve‘ recorded in Manchester, just 20 miles from The Piece Hall.
