From the opening introduction of DIE SMILING, MARSEILLE’s ambition is immediately apparent. A catchy, repetitive guitar riff proves the foundation for layers of vocals to build upon, creating a confident introduction to the EP. It is a clear indication that they are a band determined to achieve the recognition they deserve.
The EP contains a further five tracks, each retaining their distinctive sound that fans will recognise from their previous work. While there is a sound of familiarity throughout, MARSEILLE continue to demonstrate their ability to develop their sound.
Their second track HALLELUJA (MY BABY’S FREE) has catchy lyrics, emphasising the band’s ability to create strong and memorable melodies. The song has an infectious quality that draws the listener in from the very first few moments. Having already been released and becoming the bands most played song on Spotify offers an encouraging indication for success for the rest of the EP.
On their next track, that has been released recently as a single, OUT OF THE BLUE, you are hit with layers of guitar that really emphasises WILL BROWN, lead singers’ vocal ability. His vocalisation on the track sits confidently within the instrumentation, allowing the track to showcase the bands chemistry. MARSEILLE sound flawless, highlighting the brilliance of this band, indicating that they have much more to offer fans.
The Derby shoegaze band open their next track THE SUN WILL SHINE AGAIN, their title track, which contains an atmospheric feel, similar to their tracks HEAVENS AT MY DOOR and HISTORY, maintaining their unique sound. Their song THE SUN WILL SHINE AGAIN highlights the band positive feel, which matches exactly how their music sounds, maintaining both an energetic and distinctive theme.
For their 5th track, WHERE I WENT WRONG, there is a slight shift, as the track starts off slower with a melancholic pace capturing the band’s ability to play reflective songs with purpose. The shift here also demonstrates how MARSEILLE can make insightful music as well as their catchy more upbeat songs. This truly does captures how the band are capable of creating music with both emotional depth and a great variety of music while maintaining a sound that is theirs.
The EP closes with their last song FEVER which picks the pace back up, with their distinct guitars and catchy drumbeats. The song provides an energetic conclusion to the release and leaves the listener with both a strong and positive impression of a band that clearly has much more to offer.
Ultimately THE SUN WILL SHINE AGAIN demonstrates exactly why MARSEILLE are a band worth keeping an eye on. Their ability to make fresh music that sounds both catchy and skilled is brilliant. As the band continue to build a greater following, it is becoming increasingly clear that they deserve far more recognition, and this EP could be an important step towards achieving it.
