The Amazons took their 21st Century Fiction (Epilogue) UK & Ireland Headline tour to the Scottish capital on 5th October. The Monday night consisted of supporting act Gia Ford followed by The Amazons who performed to a packed out room hosted at La Belle Angele.

Gia Ford started the night off at 7.30pm with most of her set being from her new album ‘A Room Within A Room’ just recently released on 18 September. I’d heard of Gia Ford before, but this was my first time hearing her music. Gia and her band have a unique indie-pop sound that blends genres of alternative and experimental elements – a really interesting live act to listen to.

The Amazons performed shortly after, kicking off around 8.30pm opening with Fuzzy Tree. Their signature explosive guitars in Ready For Something really set the mood for the rest of the set, especially with 3rd setlist track In My Mind with Matt getting up close to the barrier to screaming fans.

I haven’t managed to catch The Amazons live since their Edinburgh show at the Queen’s Hall in December 2023, so I could really see the immense growth in their stage performance & what the new members could bring to the table. 21st Century Fiction (Epilogue) has 4 new tracks including One Hot July which, honestly, was one of my favourite songs to witness live. New addition Ella McRobb (vocals, keys and percussion) gives One Hot July a breath of fresh air with her incredible solo vocals; “baby I’m burning for you”. Looking onto the crowd was a sea of torchlights held up during it too, which also added to the atmosphere and solidified it as a set highlight for me.

The set also had a stunning cover of Wicked Game by Chris Isaak, and frontman Matt dedicated Junkfood Forever to support act Gia Ford. The night came to a close with Mother followed by fan favourite track Black Magic. As the house lights were about to come on, Matt briefly spoke with the crowd saying “We’re gonna go away for a bit, make a new record, and then be back playing in even bigger rooms”.
