To promote the release of their debut album ‘Elsewhere, Always’, Overpass have done a run of intimate gigs in record stores across the country. Having built a steady following through their EP releases and outstanding live performances, this long awaited album is finally ours and what better way to experience it than live. This time we are at Rough Trade Bristol, one of my favourite venues in the city due to its great location and overall vibe. Newly refurbished, this Rough Trade offers an amazing space for intimate gigs with plenty to occupy your time pre-gig. I spent my time looking through the extensive range of records available to purchase and chilling in the newly opened listening bar. Drinks were fairly priced and included a limited availability Overpass special brew.
As it was a small gig, the band performed a stripped back set which allowed you to access a special part of the band that they aren’t always allowed to give away. The raw emotions of the songs were revealed in the intimate nature of the set, you could really hear the yearning in Max’s voice. It allowed you to access a unique perspective to the music that may not be easily viewed from a full band set up, the rawness of the music left space to fully embrace the meaning of the lyrics and sentiment behind the songs. Backed by a choir of a crowd each song they played was masterfully performed. It makes me super excited to hear them with a full live setup. Overpass have truly produced a masterpiece with their debut album, dare I say summer is going to be soundtracked by this album. It stirs up a feeling of nostalgia for a time I have yet to live. Overpass has a tour towards the end of the year and you can bet I will be there. This small run of shows has built up the perfect hype for this era of their music. I walked away wanting more, ecstatic for the next time I’ll get to scream the lyrics alongside them. This band have got the potential to be a big name in the Indie scene, already a growing favourite Overpass’ future is incredibly bright.
