Returning to Leeds for the first time in almost a decade, Brooklyn pop-punk band I Am the Avalanche stormed the Yorkshire city with sheer force as the long awaited revisit from the New Yorkers was certainly a welcomed one on a Tuesday night.
Having released their first album in six years back in April, this was the perfect opportunity to showcase material from ‘The Horror Show‘ as well as the previous record ‘Dive’ from 2020. As the band made their way onto the compact stage, all five members made use of the little space they had while almost colliding with each other, the energy was that frantic. Tracks from ‘The Horror Show’ played a huge part in the set list, as the band opened with the album’s title track, immediately followed by ‘Laughing and Bleeding’ before churning out some more familiar songs such as ‘Holy Fuck’ and ‘Amsterdam’ to give the older fans something to get involved with early on.
Continuing on with ‘The Horror Show‘ track listing, ‘I’m Not Dead (I Just Blinked and Never Saw the Light Again)‘ and ‘I Miss California and Every Dog I’ve Ever Met‘ had the intimate venue singing along, already showing that the new record is more than familiar within their fanbase. ‘Better Days‘ and ‘Love Song 69‘ touched into the ‘Dive‘ record as the only two tracks on the night, while the only track from “Wolverines‘ came in the form of ‘177‘. The trio of golden oldies was enough to place the Key Club audience, but they were still, clamouring for more.
As ‘Rogue Knife‘ concluded ‘The Horror Show‘ material for the night, I Am the Avalanche still had time for two more songs. As soon as ‘Symphony‘ kicked in, the entire Leeds crowd screamed before the grand finale of ‘Brooklyn Dodgers‘ was enough to get the whole venue singing along once more. As the band bowed out of their Leeds return, fans will be begging for their return fairly soon.
